Information and Suggestions for Adopters of Owner
Referrals
The dog you are considering is an Owner Referral. This means that
Sheltie Rescue of Georgia, Inc. has not personally seen or evaluated
this dog. Therefore, SRG does not make any representation or take
responsibility for any of the Owner Referral dog's temperament or
health. We attempt to screen these dogs before listing but it is
your job to evaluate whether or not this dog will be a good fit in your
home and the veracity of the statements made by the owners. We
are only providing a service to list the dog as available for
individual owners who are trying to re-home their Sheltie.
Prospective adopters interested in
acquiring a dog directly from its
owner may contact the owner at the phone number or e-mail listed on the
dog's individual page. Just click on the dog's face from the Available
page.
If you have never had a dog before, we
recommend that you do not adopt
an owner referral dog. For your first dog, you would do better to
have
help from an experienced "dog person" in chosing a dog that is right
for your personality and lifestyle.
Below we have listed a few questions you should ask the owner to
help you decide if this is the right dog for you. Before talking
to the owner, read over these questions and think about what answers
you would like to hear from the owner.
- Why are you giving up your dog?
- Has the dog ever bitten, nipped, or gone after anyone?
- Does the dog have a strong herding instinct? (Dogs
with strong herding instinct can be a problem with children under 10)
- Does it have any health problems? Who is your
veterinarian? May I contact him/her? (A "no" on contacting the
vet would be a bad sign)
- Where did you get the dog?
- Does your dog have any training? Is it housebroken?
Is it crate trained?
- Is the dog left alone for long periods? What does it do?
bark? dig? chew?
- Do you consider your dog a problem barker? (Note:
All Shelties bark... anyone who says they do not is a salesman and is
not being honest with you.)
- Is it an inside or outside dog? Where does it sleep?
- How does the dog behave with adults, children, other dogs,
and cats?
- Is your dog easy going or high spirited? protective?
affectionate?
- Does your dog jump or dig out of fences? (This would
be atypical Sheltie behavior)
- Was your male dog ever used at stud before he was
neutered? (A male that has ever been bred can be very difficult
to housebreak.)
